Katherine Frohlich

Katherine Frohlich is currently finishing up some pilot work, funded through the CIHR/CTCRI on the social context of smoking. Through this work she has developed an in-depth tool to help both researchers and practitioners better understand how smoking is embedded in people's everyday activities. She is also helping develop, in collaboration with the Lea Roback Centre through its axis "Enquête sur les milieux", a study to examine the role of neighbourhoods over time in shaping social inequalities in health using smoking as an outcome.

Principales contributions de recherche (trad)
- "A theoretical proposal for the relationship between context and disease" (Frohlich, K. L., Corin, E., Potvin, L. Sociology of Health and Illness, 23 (6), 776-797 (2001)) has been cited well over 20 times in both the public health, as well as the sociological literature. The framework developed therein, the collective lifestyles framework, continues to attract students and create a forum for future work.
- The "Social theory and population health" workshop that I ran from 2002-2003 led to several publications as well as the creation of a network of researchers across Canada who continue to work on this issue.
- My continued work on the social context of smoking has led to the creation of several funded research projects, a team of researchers from across the country, and increased interest from both researchers as well as practitioners in the integration of the social context into existing models of intervention.
